One of BetterflyBox’s missions is to teach children, from an early age, the importance of maintaining the balance between living species and encouraging biodiversity.
Our first Living Lab, a living laboratory, was held on 18 April at école Sint Jozef in Uccle in the presence of parents, experts from the NGO GoodPlanet, teachers and public figures.
The pupils received a GreenBox containing an insect hotel, the materials needed to customise it, a biodiversity guide, pollinator seeds and access to the BetterflyBox geolocation app.
To mark the occasion, an insect hotel sculpture was installed in the school playground. As well as raising young people’s awareness of the challenge of biodiversity, the sculpture, painted by artist Jean-Luc Moerman, is a spectacular addition to the school grounds.
The workshops run by GoodPlanet experts were a great success with the children. They showed their interest, but above all their curiosity and motivation to get involved in actions to protect biodiversity.
We are proposing other programmes for companies, institutions and, of course, other schools.
“Our board of directors and management guarantee the educational trajectory of our 350 nursery and primary school pupils. As well as paying attention to languages, IT, sport and music, we believe it is important for our children to pay attention to biodiversity from an early age. That’s why we’re delighted to welcome the BETTERFLYBOX project and their partner GOODPLANET, in the hope of replicating it in the Brussels Region and the rest of the country. In any case, our youngsters had a school day that was both instructive and fun,” concludes Frédéric Convent, Chairman of the Sint Jozef School Organising Committee.
Together, let’s promote biodiversity through a human and connected experience.
